Caring for dental implants at home

Home care of dental implants

The structure of an implant must be brushed twice a day with low-abrasive toothpaste to remove bacterial plaque from the crown. Low-abrasive toothpaste does not harm the surface of the restoration or irritate soft tissues surrounding the implant. It is advisable to use a soft or medium toothbrush (it may be a regular or an electric toothbrush).

Every side of the structure of an implant must be cleaned:

  • A regular toothbrush or a special (narrower) brush designed for cleaning of implants can be used to clean the surface of the buccal/labial side of an implant crown.

  • To clean areas that are difficult to access (such as the lingual or palatal side of an implant crown), a special implant brush that has bristles at an angle or a monobrush can be used.

  • In order to clean around an implant, dental floss should be used once a day. Special dental flosses are available that have a stiffer end to insert through the contact point between two teeth. The central part of the floss is thicker and softer and can be used to clean the implant, and the other end is a regular dental floss.

  • A monobrush can be used to clean the implant anchors that support an overdenture.
